I have seen many New World attempts to emulate the Bordeaux method of growing grapes, none more convincing than that of Stephen White at Stonyridge... A vertical tasting did no more than confirm my view that Stephen White is making New Zealand's finest Cabernet-based red wines.
- James Halliday, Wine Atlas of Australia and New Zealand
The North facing site, which Stonyridge proudly occupies, affords our vines all day sun enabling us to ripen these Cabernet varieties to perfection. Our site is sheltered from the cooler Southwest winds and in summer we can experience over 80 days of temperatures in the 30 degree (celcius) mark during the ripening period. As stewards of this profound site our intent is to most purely and faithfully express the timeless character of the land in our wines.
Since our humble beginnings we have enjoyed international recognition for our dream – our winery has featured in Time Magazine and our top wine Larose has sold in Ducasse’s Spoon Restaurant, Hotel Byblos, St Tropez for 600 euros per bottle. It has also sold in Madrid’s top Restaurant Viridiana and three other Three Star Michelin restaurants in France, Belgium and Netherlands.
The 2016 Larose represents our 31st year of winegrowing here in the sheltered Onetangi Valley of Waiheke Island. It has been 35 years since Stephen walked on to this property. It was November 1981 and Stephen had just sailed back to New Zealand after completing the Round the world Yacht Race and skippering in the Mediterranean. There was nothing here, just golden sun burnt grass, wild horses and old broken fences. Steve fell in love with this property instantly and had no doubt what his destiny was, to make one of the greatest red wines in the world.
